I'll be frank, I always liked the notion behind Fiverr.com.
Just a few clicks and a customer can place an order with a freelancer based on a specific set of deliverables.
Easy peasy, right? Sure, but it comes at a price. A large one.
That is just one the few freelance platforms at which buyers have been given free reign to abuse, threaten and blackmail sellers any way they like.
Why? Because Fiverr turn a blind eye on it.
In this informative article, I want to discuss a recent bad experience as a seller on Fiverr, and I chose to give up on the platform altogether.
How A Regular Order Quickly Turned Into A Hostage Situation
(I've been advising her on building up a respectable account, and the way to go beyond and above with every previous purchase. Everything mentioned is her doing, I am only an observer.)
In this case, she'd only gotten another $5 sequence on her logo gig, which seemed to be just like any other... or so we thought.
The order was fulfilled in great time, and my buddy had even included a bonus logo concept in addition to the source file (that is usually part of the pricier package).
The client"loved" among those concepts and so we proceeded to deliver her the appropriates file sizes, as mentioned in the final description. Shortly after, things got a little weird.
The client came back requesting a social networking kit to go with the emblem, something which is obviously not offered as part of her gig.
In my advice, my girlfriend decided to provide the further job, despite not getting paid any extra for it.
After that, the customer responded with much more requirements and a few changes to the social networking files.
At this time, she concurred enough was enough.
Despite every effort to please this individual, they were clearly overstepping their bounds here.
This is when the customer went from only overstepping boundaries to unquestionable blackmail. (The equivalent of carrying my girlfriend's Fiverr reputation hostage.)
While she took some time to contemplate a reply and reach out to Fiverr service for assistance, the client did eventually go right ahead and leave a 1 star review.
Presumably this is to show her he/she wasn't Fiverr 2018 review - why 9 stars? - Website Planet kidding.
Shortly after, while waiting on Fiverr's response to the support query, the customer paid an extra $10 to your social media kit.
Of course, the payment was accompanied by yet another threat.
At this point, all I wanted to do was move all Liam Neeson and seek this person down so I could punch them from the face.
But, at the moment, I had hope that Fiverr service will step in and save my girlfriend from this PITA client.
After the response came back from Fiverr support, they told her they could A Fiverr Review - JudgmentBuy.com not force the buyer to take the order.
Alright, that's reasonable enough. (Even though the buyer accepted it, technically.)
In addition they suggested drawing up a list for the buyer to demonstrate the work was completed in accordance to the gig requirements.
Frankly, this response just didn't cut the mustard.
My girlfriend hauled in her initial email the customer was trying to extort her to get free work outside the agreed conditions, by making a negative review if she did not comply.
Naturally, it wasn't really about the work, it was about seeking protection against an abusive client who was blatantly pushing his luck.
Their reply didn't give us any confidence that Fiverr actually understood that, and even in this point we felt like they didn't need to get involved.
At precisely the exact same time, she also responded to the buyers most recent threat, explaining that she would not continue to operate with them unless the feedback was changed/removed.
(Again, this will be comments which was obviously and intentionally left to bully her into providing work outside of the agreed terms)
An honest petition by anyones standards, right?
Instead of acknowledge what the buyer had completed until this time, Fiverr immediately turned the tables in my girlfriend.
Turns out, she had been the one breaking all the rules.
Since she'd asked the client to modify their feedback, she was no more entitled to any help from Fiverr support.
You can imagine how we felt reading this.
Everything that the purchaser had done and said before her last message was now being swept under the carpet -- like never happened in any way.
Fiverr essentially chose to encourage a manipulative bully, leaving my girlfriend with a permanent stain on an account she'd worked so hard to accumulate.
If everything that happened wasn't upsetting enough, it's knowing that this person is still running rampant on Fiverr, preying on defensless vendors with no shred of repercussion.
And think, there are loads of buyers doing exactly this on Fiverr, knowing they can and will get away with it.
But as all of this was happening, I did a little research to determine if some other sellers went through a similar ordeal with an individual buyer.
Very quickly, I discovered a range of almost identical cases about the Fiverr forum obsolete years ago. (that's correct, decades.)
This is obviously something that's been happening for quite a while and it all stems from providing buyers too much power over vendors.
If there's one thing I have heard about Fiverr, it is that clients are ALWAYS more valued than freelancers.
Doesn't matter how long that you put into a job, or how hard you've worked on itor even how well you managed communication during a dispute, even as it really comes down to it... freelancers have little to no protection.
Even when it is a clear cut case in your favour, there's still every chance the client will come out on top. All it takes it one tiny thing that you"did wrong" according to their conditions of service and EVERYTHING else is ignored
Taking a look at the evidence, it's obvious to me which Fiverr is well aware of what is happening, yet is still eager to settle back and let it happen.
A Last Message To Fiverr. If you're a decision maker in Fiverr and you are reading this, I urge you to seriously reconsider your present support procedures for freelancers.
It is not right that someone can set all that time and effort in establishing an account and also over-delivering at every possible chance, just to be shot down from the very people that you rely on to protect you.
Look, I don't want to leave Fiverr. I don't wish to be telling folks to avoid your platform.
But after everything that has happened, you have not left me any selection.
Until something is done to guard freelancers from using this sort of abuse, I'll continue to spread this article and do anything I can to stop others from falling victim to a one-sided support team.
The next you truly do something about it and also give freelancers a means my explanation to fight , I'll be happy to update the post.
